legislative issues

Duncan TempletonThe FLEOA Legislative Committee (FLC) represents your interests on Capitol Hill and provides support and information to legislators on issues affecting Federal law enforcement. In addition to the valuable legislative guidance provided by Marie Chopra, the FLC has a cadre of no less than twenty members offering support and providing assistance when needed. These FLEOA members are Chapter officers, agency presidents and other full time members who have stepped forward and volunteered their time and individual expertise. The committee draws upon the institutional knowledge of these members when reviewing and responding to current legislation effecting Federal law enforcement in the areas of officer safety, compensation and personnel issues, due process rights, and retiree issues, to name just a few. The FLC has identified several areas in which significant change is needed such as disability benefits, locality pay, and FERS sick leave restoration and areas in need of constant scrutiny such as Firearms and Explosives issues, Military issues, and pay for performance. The FLC has assigned members in these areas and will continue to be vigilant on your behalf. Whether it's stopping the repeated attacks on your rights to due process during negative personnel actions, drumming up support for new legislation or simply responding to requests for information the FLC stays consistently engaged with Senators, Representatives, and their staffers to ensure that Federal Criminal Investigators have a voice. We stay involved and we urge each and every one of you to stay involved as well. Watch for legislative advisories on FLEOA's website and in the 1811, and then act by contacting your local representatives with your emails to their public web sites, letters to their offices and telephone calls to express your views. It makes a difference; they do listen; help us to help you by contacting your Agency President or the FLEOA Chapter President regarding legislative issues affecting you and to find out how you can, Get involved!

NOAA

FLEOA Legislative Committee supported NOAA member agents by proposing criminal provisions for inclusion into the Magnuson Act. The Magnuson Act is the principal law that federally regulates our nation's living marine resources.

The Magnuson Act passed in the last session of the 109th Congress and included some of the language proposed by our NOAA member Agents. NOAA member Agents feel that a further amendment is needed to clear up the remaining criminal language. The FLEOA Legislative Committee pledges to continue to work closely with NOAA. Special recognition should be given to Chris Schoppmeyer for spearheading the effort and for providing the institutional knowledge as a source matter expert and to FLEOA Legislative VP Duncan Templeton for his dedication and support of FLEOA legislativew issues.
